As more diesel models hit the market and Americans continued to warm up to their impressive fuel efficiency and torque, U.S. sales of oil-burning vehicles grew by 10 percent in 2013 compared to 2012. This year promises to be another momentous period for the diesel renaissance in the United States, with several more diesel models making their debut, including the recently revealed 2015 BMW X3 xDrive28d sports activity vehicle (SAV).
Unveiled last month as part of a 2015-model-year refresh for the popular BMW X3, the new X3 xDrive28d will feature a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing for sprints from 0 to 60 mph in less than eight seconds. BMW also introduced a rear-wheel-drive X3 for the first time, with the new 2015 X3 sDrive28i offering a responsive ride at a more affordable price point. Outside, all 2015 BMW X3 models will benefit from a facelift when they go on sale this spring, including a new grille surround, revised front and rear bumpers, and redesigned twin circular headlights available with a full LED treatment. Additionally, the LED turn indicators on the 2015 X3 are now embedded into the exterior side mirrors.
“The refreshed X3 will provide its owners with more value while still achieving the high level of performance that drivers expect from a BMW,” said Melanie Sterry, general manager of Russel BMW, a Baltimore BMW dealer. “While the new diesel X3 should offer a significant boost in fuel economy along with engaging acceleration, the lower pricing of the new rear-wheel-drive model will help introduce new buyers to the brand.”
BMW continues to find ways to increase the sporty appeal of its SAV lineup, recently shipping new M Performance Parts for its larger X5. Owners of the redesigned 2014 BMW X5 can now purchase various carbon-fiber exterior upgrades, including a front splitter, a rear diffuser, mirror caps and rear aero flaps, while a rear spoiler, high-gloss black kidney grilles, M Performance rocker panel decals and double-spoke 21-inch wheels with performance tires are available as well. Under the hood, an M Performance Power Kit for the X5 xDrive35i boosts output by 20 horsepower and 32 pound-feet of torque in the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine, bringing the totals to 320 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can better harness all that power with the enhanced stopping performance of the available M Performance Brake Kit.
