Renewed Lineup Leads Porsche to Record Sales in 2012

2012 year saw a variety of new models and trims arrive at Porsche dealerships, and as a result, a record number of new customers followed. Porsche’s fresh lineup attracted the luxury automaker’s best-ever sales in the United States in 2012, with overall volume rising 21 percent compared to 2011 for a total of 35,043 units.

In February of 2012, the seventh generation of the iconic Porsche 911 went on sale in lighter, faster and more fuel-efficient form, driving elevated sales of the nameplate for the remainder of the year. The sports car finished 2012 with 8,528 units sold, a 42-percent increase over 2011. Meanwhile, Porsche’s volume-leading Cayenne SUV benefitted from the arrivals of a high-performance GTS trim and a fuel-efficient Diesel trim in August and September 2012 respectively, helping to boost the vehicle’s annual sales to 15,545 units for a 20-percent jump year-over-year.

“Porsche offered its freshest lineup ever in 2012, so it only makes sense that it would achieve its best sales ever,” said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a New Hampshire Porsche dealer. “Of course, new vehicles won’t sell unless they resonate with current buyers, and by making its models simultaneously more powerful, fuel efficient and stylish, Porsche accomplished that goal and then some.”

At the end of June 2012, the all-new 2013 Porsche Boxster rolled into showrooms, not only providing a jolt to the brand’s sales, but earning the praise of industry experts as well. Last month, accolades continued to stream in for the redesigned roadster, which was named the Men’s Health 2013 Car of the Year, the Autoweek 2013 Best of the Best/Car and a 2013 10Best Car by Car and Driver magazine.

Men’s Health chose the new Boxster over 15 other Car of the Year contenders, citing the model’s “lustworthy drop-top,” “affordable indulgence” and “supremely responsive throttle” that come with no compromises. On the other hand, Autoweek selected the Boxster S as its Best of the Best/Car winner from a field of more than a dozen all-new or significantly redesigned models, evaluating each vehicle on its drivetrain, handling, exterior, interior design, ride quality and fun factor.

The Porsche Boxster’s recognition as a Car and Driver 2013 10Best Car marks the 14th time that the model has landed on the annual list since its 1996 introduction. This time around, editors lauded the car for exceeding their high expectations with a complete sports-car experience, from its “genius” steering to its impressive braking power. To be considered for the 10Best Cars list, vehicles had to have a starting price under $80,000 and be on sale by January 2013.

“The Boxster already had plenty of accolades under its belt, but when you put out a lighter, faster and stronger version, it makes the drop-top a very difficult model for critics to pass up,” added Bedell. “Now, anticipation is building for the new Cayman, the Boxster’s coupe variant, so we expect the awards and sales to keep coming when it arrives this spring.”
