Rise of Rosacea

08/15/2012 (press release: OnlinePR) // Imogen Holmes and Natasha Bradley

The Harley Medical Group urge women going through the menopause to be particularly aware of their skin during the summertime and to take added precautions with a high factor sun protection and tailored skincare regime to limit the irritating, painful and upsetting effects of rosacea.

The characteristic facial burning and stinging of rosacea, often accompanied by bumps and broken veins on the face, can be brought on or exacerbated by the hot flushes and hormonal changes commonly experienced by menopausal women. Initial symptoms can be confused with sunburn which does not go away and rosacea sufferers remain particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun.

Many women feel their self-confidence is affected by the painful and often unsightly bumps which cannot currently be cured but can be controlled through Non-Surgical treatments and Skincare products.

Bernadette Harte, Non-Surgical Specialist at The Harley Medical Group, said: “Rosacea sufferers often have extra sensitive skin that needs special care. We see many women visit us who are completely unaware of the need to adapt their usual skincare routine as they go through the menopause. Products that may have been appropriate pre-menopause may not support their skin needs post-menopause.”

“We suggest switching to our Gentle Cleanser, and avoid any hot or cold water or harsh towels when cleansing the face which may cause flushing and irritation. We also recommend using a high factor SPF alongside your moisturiser, such as our Enhanced Performance SPF 25. Adaptions to lifestyle and diet will also help – such as avoiding spicy foods and limiting alcohol intake.”

Non-Surgical treatments for rosacea vary from topical creams to vascular laser or Intense Pulsed Light treatment (IPL). Visible broken blood vessels on the face known as thread veins can also be eliminated or improved with laser treatments. The lasers produce a targeted beam of light which causes the veins to shrink, reducing the visible redness on the surface of the skin.

The Harley Medical Group offer a PPX laser – an advanced therapy developed from Light based technology – which unlike other laser and IPL is virtually painless and leaves the skin immediately looking more healthy and youthful. The laser treatment on the face lasts only a few minutes, meaning patients can quickly go back to their normal activities. A course of between 4-6 treatments is recommended for rosacea, although the results will differ from person to person.

The treatment also has excellent results for sufferers of adult acne, which can flare up in menopausal women as the hormones fluctuate and additional oil is produced.
