While both the duties and skills of the Royal Thai Army are incredibly diverse, the fact remains that we are, ultimately, a military force. Through both necessity and a sense of pride in our might and agility as such a force, the Royal Thai Army has taken great pride in amassing a diverse and useful series of armaments that has served us well in both peace and war time.
The list below offers a sample of some of the firearms currently in use by the Royal thai Army. Military equipment is always evolving and, as such, the list below is less of a complete list and more of a sampling of some of the weapons the Army uses to keep the people of Thailand safe.
1. Type 86.M1911: This .45 piston was a standard-issue side arm for the United States military for over 70 years. No other pistol has ever been known to be more reliable or trustworthy.
2. Beretta 92: The Italian gun maker Beretta introduced its signature handgun in 1975. The 5000+ of the first models that year proved so dependable that the Beretta name has become synonymous with excellent-quality handguns for over thirty years.
3. Heckler & Koch MP5: 40 nations around the world use this light weight weapon.
4. UZI: The Uzi has been among the most popular single-hand submachine guns in the world. Since its prototype was completed for use in 1954, it’s been in use in over 90 countries around the world.
5. Type 56: The Type 56 assault rifle is china’s version of the famous Russian Kalashnikov AK- 47. It’s the most widely-used ersion of the gun to date, having been used in combat not only in Asia and Eastern Europe, but in Africa and South America as well.
6. Type 11, Heckler & Koch HK33: This assault rifle was developed in West Germany in the 1960s for the sole purpose of exportation. Luckily, we imported it.
7. IMI Tavor TAR-21: This assualt rifle has most widely been used as the standard assault rifle for the state of Isreal.
8. M16A1/A2/A4: The M-16 variants of assault rifles have long been a standard firearm for western infantry. Our use of the firearm has proven useful in both peace and war time.
9. CAR-15: American gun manufacturer Colt’s version of the M-16 light machine gun has proven to be a valuable weapon for our ground forces.
10. SIG-Sauer SSG 3000: This high-quality sniper rifle was manufactured in a joint effort by both the Swiss and the Germans. It’s commonly used by law enforcement by both countries.
11. SR-25: This semi-automatic sniper rifle has been in use since the early 1990s.
12. FN MINIMI This Belgian-made light machine gun was designed and implemented in 1974 and is currently used by 30 countries in the world. For native English speakers, it also hold the benefit of having a particularly funny name.
13. Heckler & Koch HK21: This general-purpose machine gun was developed in the former West Germany in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. While we’re not the only nation currently using this weapon, we’re sure we’re the best at it.
14. IMI Negev: This gas-operated light machine gun was invented in 1985 and perfected by the Israelis in 1997. It is mobile, accurate, and durable.
15. Type 56 LMG: This is the Chinese equivalent to the Russian AK-47. It’s benefit: a fixed
bayonet that allows for manual combat after rounds of ammunition have been depleted.
16. FN MAG-58: This machine gun was originally designed in Belgium. While that country is hardly known for armed conflict, the fact that it’s remained neutral in every major war in recent history has to count for something.
17. M60: This machine gun was first introduced in 1957 by the United States and is still in use around the world to this day.
18. M2 Browning machine gun: This .50-caliber ground-mounted machine gun is very effective as a weapon mounted on top of a vehicle.
19. Mk 19 AGL: This Cold War-era invention is a 40-mm belt-fed grenade launcher.
20. M72 LAW: Civilians call this portable anti-tank single-shot missile a bazooka. It’s popularity in popular culture is only matched by its offensive ability.
21. BGM-71 TOW: First designed in 1970, this anti-tank missile is one of the most highly-used of its kind in the world.
