Both available with a pair of responsive-yet-efficient EcoBoost engines, the Ford Escape and Fusion attracted record August sales last month, with each model moving roughly 29,000 units in the United States. The Escape compact SUV saw a 9 percent sales increase compared to August 2013, while sales of the Fusion midsize sedan rose by 20 percent year-over-year. Yet another EcoBoost-enhanced model, the Ford Explorer SUV, posted its best August sales since 2004.
The 2015 Ford Escape returns up to 32 mpg on the highway when outfitted with its optional 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, while an upgrade to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder will get buyers 240 horsepower and a still-impressive 30-mpg highway rating. That same 2.0-liter nets up to 33 mpg on the highway in the 2015 Ford Fusion, which is also available with a 181-horsepower 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that achieves up to 37 mpg on the highway. In the 2015 Ford Explorer, the aforementioned 2.0-liter unit is rated at 28 mpg on the highway, while an efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has 365 horsepower on tap.
“With their advanced direct-injection and turbocharging technologies, Ford’s EcoBoost engines manage to punch well above their weight class in horsepower while sipping fuel at the same time,” said Jeff Klein, general sales manager of Thomas Ford, a Ford dealership in Beverly, Mass. “An EcoBoost four-cylinder harnesses the power of a V6, while an EcoBoost V6 packs in the power of a V8. That’s a pretty appealing thought for car buyers in a variety of segments.”
This fall, EcoBoost technology will be put to the ultimate test when it is offered to performance-hungry Ford Mustang buyers for the first time. The redesigned 2015 Mustang will be available with an all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that churns out 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Despite that massive output, the new EcoBoost is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Mustang engine yet. Production of the sixth-generation Ford Mustang began at the pony car’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan late last month.
