SHHHH IN THE THEATRES!!! Grind House Wins Again

09/25/2014 (press release: DGuzman) // Los Angeles, CA, US // Deborah Guzman

American Cinematheque and Amity , a non-profit  theatre,  makes a winning move by presenting the grind house film SHHHH in this year’s BEYOND FEST.  This slasher comedy with an 80’s vibe, recently joined the film line-up just a week ago, and it just so happens that the film is titled SHHHH.  I decided to track down a very tall gentleman as he exited the theater. “I’ve been coming here for years, “he says. “The American Cinematheque relies on viewer’s support, so they are specific when choosing a film to screen.  SHHHH is loaded with cameos, death scenes, and beautiful women, a good representation of grind house and what people want. SHHHH will bring the crowd that American Cinemateque needs.”  He said with a knowing smile as he continued down Hollywood Blvd.  Unlike annual film festivals, American Cinematheque screens year-round and provides the public with a ongoing venue to watch films by all types of filmmakers.

“I’m so excited! This film has really come a long way.”  Says Camille Calvin, an actress who plays the role of Tanzania, the girlfriend of a mob boss.  Jason Rutherford is the director of this  grind house film which is also his first narrative feature film.  When I asked her about how she learned about SHHHH screening at Beyond Fest, her face lit up. “When I first got the call from Jason, I was surprised.  I could tell that it was important, but the news absolutely shocked me.  He’s worked very hard for this.” Camille continues,   “Before I read for the role, there were many phone calls from Jason.  He wanted to make sure I understood the tone of the film. He had tons of backstory about my character.  I thought this is great!  He’s done most of the work for me.  He definitely knows what he wants. She says as she gazes outside the café window.  Rutherford’s first film was a documentary “MASTERS OF THE GRIND”, filled with popular grind house filmmakers and actors.  MASTERS OF THE GRIND went on to be screened at The New Beverly Cinema, known for being owned by the Lord of grind house cinema himself, Mr. Quentin Tarantino.

The film SHHHH includes familiar faces like Diane Goldner (Feast), Austin Stoker (Assault on Precinct 13), Kitten Natividad (Beneath the valley of the Ultra-Vixens) and Troma Entertainment’s co-founder Lloyd Kaufman.  A free screening of SHHHH will be held at  Beyond Fest. In the Spielberg Theatre at The Egyptian on October 2, 2014 9:30 pm.  Free tickets will be available at the box office at 6pm the night of the show.
