Social Media Drives Desire for Cosmetic Surgery in Young Adults

04/03/2014 (press release: Southern Surgical Arts) // Carey Nease

According to a 2013 report from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as many as one in three people seek some type of facial cosmetic procedure. The report highlights the increase in demand particularly for collagen and Botox injections among younger adults under the age of 30. This increase in demand for procedures is driven by photo sharing apps and other social media tools.

Social platforms such as Selfie.im and Snapchat, which are completely image based, are forcing patients to put their image under a microscope, looking at their appearance with a more critical eye than ever before. The fact is that these images are usually the very first impressions that young people put out to the world, and social media users are increasingly aware of the image they are projecting.

Which, in many cases, is not their current face.

Staying in line with social users on platforms like Snapchat and Pinterest, which are predominantly female oriented, women make up the majority of patients at Southern Surgical Arts. Every year, young adults to the mature receive a large proportionate amount of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

“The young adult segment is one of the fastest growing markets for cosmetic procedures,” said Jennifer Deal, Director of Marketing for Southern Surgical Arts. “When these patients come for consultations, they often bring photos they’ve found online as examples of the results they’d like. This is why Southern Surgical Arts finds it so important to be active in the online world. It is important to us to educate consumers about cosmetic surgery through our social media platforms and blog.”

Southern Surgical Arts posts weekly informative guidebooks and articles on social media pages, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube and Pinterest. “It’s our goal to assist patients in the research phase of their decision to pursue cosmetic surgery. Using the different social media helps us reach and help these patients so they can know the latest information,” said Deal.

While the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has proven social media to be a driving force behind the increase in cosmetic surgery procedures, the board-certified cosmetic surgeons at Southern Surgical Arts want to ensure that each patient is aware of all her options prior to undergoing any type of treatment once the research phase is complete. Dr. Chad Deal and Dr. Carey Nease can help patients define their goals and gain results similar to those they have seen on social media sites.
