Motorbike accident claims specialist firm Sorrymate.com has welcomed a call from the Institute of Advanced Motorists for bikers’ safety to be given greater priority.
The IAM’s call came after research which it commissioned found that up to one in six of all motorcyclists’ deaths were caused by hitting crash barriers.
Alarmingly, the Institute also found that bikers were 15 times more likely to be killed than occupants of a car in the event of a collision with a crash barrier.
In an effort to reduce this statistic, the IAM is pressing for crash barriers to be modified by fitting them with plastic guards which cover their hard metal surfaces, and are designed to give added protection to bikers.
Launching his organisation’s campaign, IAM chairman Alistair Cheyne said: “Roads in general and crash barriers in particular are largely designed with four or more wheels in mind. The needs of more vulnerable motorcyclists must become a priority.”
His call is echoed by Paul Dutton from Sorrymate.com, who, along with many of the staff at his company is a keen biker. He said: “As people who often handle the fallout from bikers’ mishaps on the roads, we see the real – and sometimes tragic – consequences of bikers’ encounters with all kinds of hazards and objects on the roads.
“So we’d warmly welcome any developments which would make the roads safer for the many thousands of people who get great enjoyment out of biking.”
He added that the crash barrier statistics were “frightening”, but with a more enlightened approach by Government towards road safety for bikers, many risks could be significantly reduced, or even possibly eliminated altogether.
“It’s sad to think that Britain has a great reputation for road safety, yet it lags behind on this issue,” Mr Dutton said. “We need improvements in existing standards for road infrastructure, so that they take proper account of motorcyclists.”
