The compact crossover SUV class has been one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments in recent years, and it seems that no other automaker has benefited more from that growth than Subaru. In March, the company’s fresh duo of compact crossover SUVs, the Subaru Forester and XV Crosstrek, each saw its best-ever month of sales, helping the overall Subaru lineup report an all-time monthly sales record of its own.
Still benefiting from a complete redesign for the 2014 model year, the Subaru Forester moved 13,846 units in the United States last month, a 53 percent increase compared to March 2013. Meanwhile, the Subaru XV Crosstrek’s tally of 6,585 units was its highest yet since launching as an all-new vehicle in September of 2012, with its March sales surging by 41 percent year-over-year. The impressive dealership performances of the Forester and XV Crosstrek have been instrumental in Subaru’s 28 consecutive months of sales increases.
“Subaru continues to be the hottest automaker in the industry, and a big reason for that is its development of two popular compact crossovers that each fills a niche in its own fast-growing segment instead of stealing sales away from each other,” said Jamie Palazzo, general manager of Pine Belt Subaru, a New Jersey Subaru dealer in Lakewood. “The Forester is probably best described as a nimbler version of a traditional SUV, while the XV Crosstrek is a more rugged version of a traditional hatchback, but either one offers great fuel economy and excellent all-conditions capability with the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.”
Each vehicle provides 8.7 inches of ground clearance, with the 2015 Forester returning up to 32 mpg on the highway with its standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine and the 2014 XV Crosstrek netting up to 33 mpg on the highway, thanks to its standard 2.0-liter Boxer, which makes it the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover in America. Though the XV Crosstrek has a slight edge in fuel economy, the Forester features an additional 12.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats, boasting a total of 34.4 cubic feet. Outside, the latest Forester sports a more aggressive design with “hawkeye” headlights and a slightly taller grille, while the XV Crosstrek is essentially a raised and cladded version of the sleek Impreza hatchback.
