Orlando’s own “Inner City Guru,” Toni Washington, will be traveling to California later this month to share her wisdom on building communities and developing leadership at the National Innovative Communities Conference. Ms. Washington will present a workshop entitled “Keys To Community Engagement.” at the two-day conference.
Ms. Washington is the Founder and Director of Programs for My Rules, My Reality, an Orlando-based consulting firm specializing in all things for the inner city from developing programs to managing a non-profit to engaging youth and other community members. She has been an advocate for youth for more than 20 years and previously oversaw the development, outreach and expansion of the Parramore Kidz Zone in downtown Orlando through a contract with the city while President of Community Concept Services, Inc. (CCSI).
“I just care about the youth,” Ms. Washington said. “I want to help the families. To do that, I need to help the communities understand them, advocate for them, and provide uplifting and positive programs and services. I’m excited to participate in this international conference sharing what I’ve learned raising my own family and working with youth in Orlando and other cities across the nation.”
Ms. Washington’s workshop will highlight critical components organizations need to unlock a successful project or program, get their mission off the ground or, if they are struggling, to evaluate whether or not they have the right keys in place to continue their work. “A lot of people have a good heart and want to help, but they really don’t understand the scope of work involved in a successful, youth & family-oriented mission,” Ms. Washington said. “That’s where this workshop is going to help them think through the whole process to help them figure out how and if to get started.”
The purpose of the conference is “To bring together and empower the community as a whole through solution oriented discussions with some of the leading innovators in the nation.” It will be held June 20 and 21 in Ontario, California. Partners for Innovative Communities are the conferences organizer. It is being sponsored in part by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Ms. Washington’s workshop is being underwritten by Home Depot.
