Safety is always an important consideration when purchasing a new car, but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean sacrificing performance. To answer drivers’ need for speed, safety-minded Volvo is turning to its motorsports partner Polestar to produce performance-tuned models of its Volvo C30 T5 R-Design. Only 250 of the 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition hatchback will be made, and all of them are headed for the United States starting this November.
Enhancements to the Volvo C30 begin with changes to the sporty coupe’s standard 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine. In the Polestar-tuned model, a software tweak boosts airflow into the combustion chambers and improves spark timing, adding 23 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque for a total of 250 horsepower and 273 pound-feet. Even with the added power, fuel economy remains the same at 29 mpg on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission.
“While most people think of safety when they think of Volvo, performance has become an important focus of its lineup in recent years,” said Cliff Nichols, general sales manager of Mitchell Volvo, a Simsbury, CT Volvo dealer. “Driving enthusiasts will love the precision handling and increased power in the C30 Polestar Limited Edition, yet they can feel confident that Volvo’s innovative safety features, like its side-impact and whiplash protection systems, are still there to protect them.”
Outside, the special C30 Polestar gets a coat of new-for-2013 Rebel Blue paint, 17-inch matte-black alloy wheels and Polestar badges on the rear and sides. The stiffer shocks and springs and quicker-ratio steering from the C30 T5 R-Design are also included in the Polestar Limited Edition for sharper handling. Meanwhile, automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers, which were made standard on all C30s for the 2013 model year, combine with Active Dual Xenon headlights to offer increased visibility during inclement weather.
Leather seats in either Off-Black or Off-Black and Calcite complement the driver-focused feel of the C30 Polestar Limited Edition’s cabin, which includes sport pedals and a sport steering wheel. Premium features from the C30 T5 R-Design have also made their way inside, like a power moonroof, power front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. To designate the model as a limited edition, a special numbered plate is mounted in the interior as well.
Polestar has partnered with Volvo since 1996, when the performance outfit started tuning Volvo cars for racing circuits. Today, a handful of Volvo production vehicles come standard with Polestar’s tuning, including the 2013 S60 T6 R-Design and the 2013 XC60 T6 R-Design, while its tuning upgrades are available for a wide variety of models dating back to the 2008 model year.
“Whether you value speed, safety or both, there’s a vehicle in the Volvo lineup that can satisfy your needs,” added Nichols. “Buyers that aren’t lucky enough to get their hands on one of the new C30 Polestar Limited Editions can still upgrade many Volvo vehicles with Polestar tuning, meaning they’ll get the best performance possible without losing gas mileage.”
