VW GTI and Jetta SportWagen Named U.S. News Best Cars for the Money

It can be easy for auto journalists to praise a car when they don’t have to pay for it, but thankfully, U.S. News & World Report publishes its Best Cars for the Money awards to honor the models that not only attract critical acclaim but also deliver on cost savings. Volkswagen landed two vehicles on U.S. News’ list this year, with the automaker’s 2014 VW GTI winning in the Upscale Small Cars category and its 2014 Jetta SportWagen topping the Wagons segment.

U.S. News determined its 2014 Best Cars for the Money awards by starting with average price paid, based on TrueCar.com figures, and five-year total cost of ownership data from Vincentric, LLC. Those figures were then combined with U.S. News’ own vehicle rankings, which are based on reviews from automotive press in regard to performance, interior features and comfort, as well as third-party safety and reliability ratings. Priced starting at around $25,000, the 2014 Volkswagen GTI offers affordable performance with a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, allowing for 6.8-second sprints from 0 to 60 mph. On the other hand, the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen is often praised for its versatility, providing nearly 67 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded while returning up to 42 mpg on the highway with its optional 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel four-cylinder engine.

“Volkswagen allows car buyers to save money on a daily basis without diluting the things that they’re looking for in their driving experience, whether it’s engaging performance or a refined and versatile interior,” said David Wilson, general manager of Russel Volkswagen, a VW dealer in Baltimore. “The VW GTI and Jetta SportWagen are two great but different examples of the value that the brand provides, with one model being an acclaimed hot hatch and the other a popular option for growing families.”

The Jetta SportWagen also recently received recognition on Strategic Vision’s Most Loved Vehicles in America list, joining the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat. Rated on a 1,000-point scale that measured the emotional responses of their owners, the trio of Volkswagen models each emerged as winners in their segments based on overall satisfaction, commitment, total top emotional responses, proposed repurchase loyalty and actual repurchase loyalty. The Jetta SportWagen was determined to be a “Most Loved” vehicle in the Mid-Size Multi-Function Car category, while the Jetta and Passat shared the same distinction in the Mid-Size Car segment.
